7 Amazing Skin and Health Benefits of Rosemary

Rosemary has been used by cooks and apothecaries since ancient times to enhance the flavours of everyday food and set tastes buds alight. Also known as ‘Dew of the Sea’,  (derived from Latin ros marinus) it has a reputation for strengthening memory. In times past, brides and grooms wore a sprig of Rosemary as an emblem of fidelity. It was once burned in sick rooms to purify the air. I read recently that in Mediterranean countries, fresh linen was dried on a bed of rosemary to help repel moths. Oh happy days, don’t tell anyone but I  have mothophobia, scurred to death of moths (yes that’s a real word) and so I will be making some rosemary water and spritzing my bed sheets every night!

So let’s get to the 7 amazing skin and health benefits of this wonderful herb.

  1. It is high in antioxidants and is known to increase the skin’s elasticity and reduce age spots.
  2. Rosemary contains essential oils and compounds such as phenolic acids which are known to protect cells from oxidative stress. They also have anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antiseptic properties. Skin types that benefit from rosemary are – oily, acne prone, mature and sun-damaged. (source)
  3. It also promotes hair growth and is known to leave your locks looking glossy.
  4. This wonder herb is rich in B-complex vitamins such as folate and riboflavin. And Vitamins A, C and E.
  5. Add to the list minerals and nutrients like calcium, potassium and magnesium as well as omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids.
  6. Has a relaxing effect on the respiratory and digestive system.
  7. Medical studies have also shown that Rosemary stimulates the memory. and is also mood enhancing thus helps to relieve stress.(source)

5 Age Defying Skin Tips

5 Age Defying Skin Care tips.

Are you over 40? Do you wake up each morning to pluck out a grey hair or worse, use a magnifying mirror to examine your wrinkles? Do you try every anti-ageing skin care brand on the market and wonder, why does this cream NOT do what it says on the jar?

Seriously though, as women, we are always looking for ways to hold back the inevitable signs of age. And, if like me, you are going through the menopause, you will be more than aware of how all the hormonal shifts you experience wreak havoc on your skin. Not only does it reduce collagen production, which leads to the breakdown of the skin’s elasticity, it also causes pigmentation and hyperpigmentation problems. If that’s not bad enough, your skin cell renewal rate slows down dramatically, and all these changes can leave our faces looking a little lack luster and looser than before. Ugh! So how do you combat this? When it comes to the skin, let me introduce you to five neat little tricks to help improve its outward appearance and control and slow down the aging process.

Steam and Exfoliate.

1. For the steam, add a bunch of fresh sage (which contains magical anti-aging properties) into a glass bowl. Steam like you did back in the day with a towel over your head and your face about 11 inches away from the bowl. Steaming releases essential oils from the sage into the skin, opens pores, encourages lymphatic drainage and stimulates blood flow. While your skin is still damp, apply your exfoliator. Use your fingertips to move it around your skin. Doing this removes dead cells, which in turn promotes the renewal of new skin cells and will improve the tone and texture of your skin. I recommend the Gentle Face Exfoliator by Liz Earle.

Tone and Serum

2. Appling toner to your skin helps to stimulate the blood flow which further acts to brighten your skin. Skin tonics such as rosewater and lavender water are easy and cheap to purchase. Next, apply a serum jam-packed with nutrients that will help speed up cell regeneration and improve the overall appearance of your skin. My all-time favourite Clarins Double Serum. It is powered by 20 plant extracts that help reactivate the skins vital functions. It speeds up regeneration and ultimately reduces the signs of ageing and serves to add a brightening boost to your skin. Forget new shoes, I want new skin.

Moisturise Day and Night.

3. Moisturising both day and night is essential. Treating your skin with creams that are rich in antioxidants will help protect your skin. Look for products containing Vitamin A and C, resveratrol (found in black grapes) and green tea as these products are steeped in antioxidants. The Body Shop’s Root’s of Strength Essence Lotion is amazing. Inspired by Chinese Medicine it has three power root extract ingredients that help improve the skin’s elasticity. You can use it daily as a moisturiser. I would also recommend investing in an additional night cream for an added boost of nutrition and I absolutely love The Body Shop’s Oils for Life Sleeping Cream.

Foundation and Illuminate

4. As we mature, it’s important to think about the products you put on your skin. Use a foundation that will protect, moisturise and brighten your skin. Avoid oil-free or mattifying formulae as these may dry out or dull your skin. Clarins SOS primers are absolutely fabulous and give your skin an instant glow. My personal fave’s for mature skin are the pigment corrector and skin blur. Worth The investment. When it come’s to foundations I’m mad about MAC’s Mineralise Foundation or YSL’s La Teint Touche Eclat. They are both brightening and illuminating for your skin. Both formulae are creamy and light, yet buildable and leave your skin looking radiant.

Lips and lipstick

5. Don’t forget to treat your lips. The nose to lip lines (nasolabial folds) like the eyes, is first to reveal the tell-tale signs of ageing. They also seem to be an area we tend to neglect and shouldn’t. To treat this area, I highly recommend applying a lip cream in addition to your daily moisturisers. The one I use, not just on my own face but clients too, is Nuxuriance Ultra Eye and Lip Cream by Nuxe. Apply along the lip to nose lines and around the outside of your lips. When choosing a lipstick, steer clear of bright pinks and cherry reds as they can be ageing. Instead, use softer shades such as warm peaches, soft corals and pinks, and mid-toned nudes. Trust me, they take years off not pile them on.

My 333 Day Holistic Beauty Challenge

Why 333 Days of Holistic Beauty?  Well, I believe its time to redefine the modern ideal of the word ‘beauty’ and show You that in this Universe we are all, truly Beautiful. I picked the number because it has a deep spiritual meaning to me, and I’ll explain a bit more about that further on.  Firstly though, I want to tell you my heartfelt reasons for embarking upon my Holistic Beauty Challenge.

I awoke on the first day of this long and dark month with a mind as blank as an empty coal bucket.  Absolutely nothing there. No thought! No inspiration! I had to dig deep into this nothingness to find a spark! Something to light the fire in my mind. Anything! I didn’t want 2018 to be ordinary. And so, I did what I usually do when there’s nothing upstairs. I retreated into meditation. I traveled downward, deep inside my heart to discover my path and reveal my soul’s sincere desire.

Ten days later (which is why I’ve been so quiet) I found that spark. Phew! And now the emptiness of mind makes sense. It’s to become my canvas to create something beautiful. I want to fill the next 333 days with colour and Holistic Beauty. Okay, I admit it, I am a die-hard hippy chick at heart, born in the age of Aquarius and under the star sign Pisces!! But I believe it’s important to be quirky, unique and fill life with as much colour as possible. My intention is to share my unique and holistic beauty revelations, both the frivolous ones and the profound over the next 333 days.  And I cordially invite you to take this journey with me.

Of course, I shall still remain true to my beauty heritage and have fun days filled with practical skin and beauty tips. Mostly, though it’s my heartfelt desire to help You find that beautiful light within. To show You that ‘Beauty’ is so much more than our physical appearance. Holistic Beauty begins from within and radiates out.

What 333 means to me.

Well, for one, I’m seeing this particular sequence of numbers everywhere at the moment. It’s a little nudge from the Universe reminding me of my place. And the triple 3 is the embodiment of universal beauty, friendship, diversity and honest expression.  It’s creative, kind, colorful, compassionate and communicative.  This divinely feminine number is represented by the Empress. Fertile, strong, beautiful and full of love. In our world right now and in my industry,  I sincerely believe it’s important to redefine our concept and ideas relating to ‘beauty’.

My hope is this will become more than just a personal journey. It would be wonderful to have a bit of company along the way. So, who’s interested in hopping aboard the holistic beauty cruise for the next 333 days to tout a lot of love.  (Getting a little overzealous with my metaphors and similes, ah sure!) As we set sail I hope we can fish out those who feel lost among the flotsam and jetsam floating in the negative waves.  Let’s flick the dirt from our shoulders, dig deep and switch on our inner lights. I challenge you to reveal the ‘real’ and ‘holistically beautiful’ you. To connect with your soul’s most heartfelt desire. To ignite your spark and embark upon a beautiful mission to make 2018 extraordinary.

Just one more thing. A simple idea to help you on the days you struggle. Get a large piece of paper and sellotape, tac or pin it somewhere you can view it daily. On day one, draw a heart and insert ‘me’ in the center. Every day add a word that inspires you or encompasses your vision of Holistic Beauty. It can be a person, place, anything at all.  But just one word. And when you experience an off day, look at the vision paper and say each word, aloud.

Let’s spread a little holistic beauty…

Peace, love and loads of beautiful hugs Debs x
