7 Amazing Ways Turmeric ‘The Wonder Spice’ Will improve your Skin and Health!

Turmeric has numerous skin and health benefits with over 6000 peer-reviewed articles published. This makes it one of the most talked about spices on the medical and natural health net. Want to know why it is so good for your skin and health? Well, it contains a powerful compound curcumin, renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antiviral properties. And that’s just the start. I’ve put together some of my favourite beauty and health concoctions to help you improve your natural beauty regimen.

1. Acne Skin Mask

Turmeric is proved to reduce inflammation and help clear the skin. Simply –debs zen beauty

  • add a 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp white flour
  • 1 tbsp natural yoghurt
  • 2 tsp honey (great for mopping up excess oil)
  • 1/2 tsp lemon juice (omit if you have cuts or sores on the face)
  • Mix well. Then using a foundation brush or your fingers apply over your face. Leave to dry for 20 mintues. Remove with a hot (not too hot though) face cloth.
  • Then do your normal cleanse tone and moisturise routine. Your skin will sing after this fab mask.

2. It also helps calm Psoriasis and Eczema

It is also a complementary treatment for people who suffer from skin conditions such as Eczema and Psoriasis. For a calming face poultice,

Mix a 1/4 teaspoon of Turmeric to 1 Cup of Warm Milk. Allow milk to then cool.  The best way to apply is to simply soak some cotton discs into the mixture and dab on to your skin. Allow it to dry, then rinse with tepid water. Finish cleaning it off with a creamy cleanser, tone with rosewater and apply your moisturizer. This mask can help reduce angry redness, inflammation and soothe the skin.

3. Natures Anti-Inflammatory

I am allergic to medicinal anti-inflammatories, which can be a nuisance if you have arthritis or muscular pain and swelling. After doing some research on natural anti-inflammatories, I stumbled across some great articles on Turmeric and its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. So I decided to give it a whirl.

What I do is heat up some milk. I apply a teaspoon of ground turmeric, a pinch of nutmeg and a heaped teaspoon of honey to taste. I love it and it is so palatable and comforting. I take it when the aul joints get a bit creaky and I must say it works for me. Natural remedies are truly powerful and there is also some pain relieving properties in turmeric. It’s not something I would do every day, only on days or weeks I’m feeling particularly bad. This is well worth a try, particularly if you suffer from arthritis or joint pain.

4. Itchy, Flaky Scalp?

Do you suffer from dandruff? Well would you believe, you can make a hair mask using turmeric and olive oil. All you have to do is –

Apply a teaspoon of the yellow wonder spice to about two teaspoons of olive oil. Massage into your scalp and leave on for about 15 minutes. Next, add about a capful of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (optional) to, two capfuls of shampoo and wash your hair thoroughly. Guaranteed glossy non-flaky locks!

5. Anti-Aging Properties

Turmeric can also be used as an exfoliator and it has powerful anti-aging properties. It is also a very cost-effective skin treatment and I would recommend using this at least once per week at night time only.  The method is simple –

I use about a half teaspoon (use a quarter if you’re very pale) of turmeric, two teaspoons of gram flour (made from chickpeas and found in any good health food store).  Slowly add water until it becomes a paste. Next, moisten your skin, then gently exfoliate with the paste. Rinse off with warm water and follow your usual nighttime beauty regime.

6. Ginger & Turmeric Vitality Shot

This one is a zinger, especially if you work out a lot or you feel your immune system needs a boost.  The combined ingredients have anti-inflammatory, immune boosting, anti-viral and detoxifying properties. I’ll have one of those thanks. All you have to do is juice,

  • An inch of Root Ginger,
  • A good pinch (2 tsps) of turmeric
  • 1 whole lemon (for the zing factor)
  • And why not sprinkle a bit of black pepper just for an added kick.

7. Warm and Citrusy Turmeric Tea.

As a result of its many medicinal values, sipping a cup of delicious turmeric tea may help ease headaches, alleviate depression, get rid of heartburn and calm down stomach problems. It’s worked for me with regard to my IBS. It settles the spasms and improves the quality of my bathroom usage (ahem!). It sounds spicy, but believe me, this delicious tea is soothing and satisfying. Give it a go.

The recipe is simple to make – You will need; 2 cups of water, 1 inch of turmeric root (or 2 tsp ground turmeric), cinnamon stick, a pinch of sea salt,  slice up an orange, honey, and lemon wedges.

Method – Add water to the pot and bring to the boil, add peeled ginger, your turmeric, cinnamon and sliced orange to boiling water. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Strain into a large mug. Add a generous helping of honey and a squeeze of lemon to finish. Sit, sip and enjoy!

5 Age Defying Skin Tips

5 Age Defying Skin Care tips.

Are you over 40? Do you wake up each morning to pluck out a grey hair or worse, use a magnifying mirror to examine your wrinkles? Do you try every anti-ageing skin care brand on the market and wonder, why does this cream NOT do what it says on the jar?

Seriously though, as women, we are always looking for ways to hold back the inevitable signs of age. And, if like me, you are going through the menopause, you will be more than aware of how all the hormonal shifts you experience wreak havoc on your skin. Not only does it reduce collagen production, which leads to the breakdown of the skin’s elasticity, it also causes pigmentation and hyperpigmentation problems. If that’s not bad enough, your skin cell renewal rate slows down dramatically, and all these changes can leave our faces looking a little lack luster and looser than before. Ugh! So how do you combat this? When it comes to the skin, let me introduce you to five neat little tricks to help improve its outward appearance and control and slow down the aging process.

Steam and Exfoliate.

1. For the steam, add a bunch of fresh sage (which contains magical anti-aging properties) into a glass bowl. Steam like you did back in the day with a towel over your head and your face about 11 inches away from the bowl. Steaming releases essential oils from the sage into the skin, opens pores, encourages lymphatic drainage and stimulates blood flow. While your skin is still damp, apply your exfoliator. Use your fingertips to move it around your skin. Doing this removes dead cells, which in turn promotes the renewal of new skin cells and will improve the tone and texture of your skin. I recommend the Gentle Face Exfoliator by Liz Earle.

Tone and Serum

2. Appling toner to your skin helps to stimulate the blood flow which further acts to brighten your skin. Skin tonics such as rosewater and lavender water are easy and cheap to purchase. Next, apply a serum jam-packed with nutrients that will help speed up cell regeneration and improve the overall appearance of your skin. My all-time favourite Clarins Double Serum. It is powered by 20 plant extracts that help reactivate the skins vital functions. It speeds up regeneration and ultimately reduces the signs of ageing and serves to add a brightening boost to your skin. Forget new shoes, I want new skin.

Moisturise Day and Night.

3. Moisturising both day and night is essential. Treating your skin with creams that are rich in antioxidants will help protect your skin. Look for products containing Vitamin A and C, resveratrol (found in black grapes) and green tea as these products are steeped in antioxidants. The Body Shop’s Root’s of Strength Essence Lotion is amazing. Inspired by Chinese Medicine it has three power root extract ingredients that help improve the skin’s elasticity. You can use it daily as a moisturiser. I would also recommend investing in an additional night cream for an added boost of nutrition and I absolutely love The Body Shop’s Oils for Life Sleeping Cream.

Foundation and Illuminate

4. As we mature, it’s important to think about the products you put on your skin. Use a foundation that will protect, moisturise and brighten your skin. Avoid oil-free or mattifying formulae as these may dry out or dull your skin. Clarins SOS primers are absolutely fabulous and give your skin an instant glow. My personal fave’s for mature skin are the pigment corrector and skin blur. Worth The investment. When it come’s to foundations I’m mad about MAC’s Mineralise Foundation or YSL’s La Teint Touche Eclat. They are both brightening and illuminating for your skin. Both formulae are creamy and light, yet buildable and leave your skin looking radiant.

Lips and lipstick

5. Don’t forget to treat your lips. The nose to lip lines (nasolabial folds) like the eyes, is first to reveal the tell-tale signs of ageing. They also seem to be an area we tend to neglect and shouldn’t. To treat this area, I highly recommend applying a lip cream in addition to your daily moisturisers. The one I use, not just on my own face but clients too, is Nuxuriance Ultra Eye and Lip Cream by Nuxe. Apply along the lip to nose lines and around the outside of your lips. When choosing a lipstick, steer clear of bright pinks and cherry reds as they can be ageing. Instead, use softer shades such as warm peaches, soft corals and pinks, and mid-toned nudes. Trust me, they take years off not pile them on.

5 Essential Steps to help you achieve Fresh and Radiant Skin

Is your skin dry, dehydrated and dull?

Well, you can blame Jack Frost for taking his time about kicking off his boots. But elements of spring are in the air. Oh who am I kidding, it’s Ireland the land of all seasons anytime anywhere. So, with that in mind, lets help you to restore, revive and freshen up your beauty booty no matter what the weather.

Here are my Five Essential Tips to help you achieve Fresh and Radiant Skin, with some great product recommendations.

1 – The Deep Clean Energise – Sage Facial Steam

This wise old herb is a powerful immune stimulant.  The list of its curative properties is long.  A cup of sage infused tea can improve your memory and a strong cuppa can help ease nervous tension. But what of the skin benefits. Well, the Chinese have long coveted sage believing it’s the cure to eternal youth. And I believe there is most definitely something in this. It’s cheap to buy and all you need to do is –

Tear up some leaves with your hands. Pop into a glass pyrex bowl (not metal). Pour over boiling water, then throw a towel over your head and steam clean your skin (make sure you’ve removed makeup before doing this!).

What it does is opens up the pores, the oils from the sage are released and absorbed by your skin. It relaxes the skin, speeds up blood circulation, encourages lymphatic drainage and leaves you with clean and glowing skin.

2.  Time for a bit hydration boost – put on your Mask.debs zen beauty den

One of my favourite skin care brands is Nuxe. Simple packaging that contains skin care for all seasons and ages. Their Creme Fraiche de Beaute Hydrating Face Mask further aids the deep cleaning process of your skin. Pop it on and stick your feet up for twenty minutes while it seeps into your skin, hydrating and nourishing it as it works. Having your feet up helps with your blood flow, relaxes and ensures, that when the hydrating process is finished, you will be good to glow.

Here’s a tip: If you are going to steam clean, exfoliate or use a mask, do it at night. Your skin will reap the rewards while you sleep.

3. Tone and tighten those pores.

Okay, I’m going to recommend two different types of toners here. One works best with mature skin, the other for dry and sensitive skin. What both products do is tone the skin, prepare it for moisture and tighten the pores. Tip, leave your toner in the fridge as the coolness will really help to close those pores off. Especially, if you have steamed then added a mask to your skin.

Clarins Super Restorative Treatment Essence does a lot more than just tone the skin. It is infused with a whole heap of nourishing ingredients that penetrate, revive and replenish your skin. Proper skin food and I’m loving it.Debs Zen Beauty DenDebs Zen Beauty Den

The Body Shops British Rose Toner is infused with aloe vera and soothes and tones the skin. It works great for dry and sensitive skin types of all ages and it is 100% Vegan.

4. Nourish, feed, hydrate and illuminate with a facial oil.

I can’t say enough about using a face oil.  Why?  Well, oils deliver vital nutrients such as minerals and vitamins to your skin.  These nutrients will help combat dryness and nourish it. You only got once face so you gotta treat it right. For my client who suffers from dry flaky skin especially around the nose, I will always recommend a good facial oil.  I’ve found that most people, when the flakes appear tend to reach for the face scrub. Ah lads, if you use a face scrub daily on the problematic area, it will only multiply the flakiness and enhance the dryness.

This is where the magic of Oils come in.  Apply it to any flaky patches nightly.  Simply warm up few drops of oil in the palms of your hands and then press into your face.   This helps with the absorption of the oil. Easy peasy. Once this is done just grab a hold of the next essential hydrating product.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Oil is a bit of a legend and if you have dry, dehydrated, starved or mature skin, this is an essential skin food oil.

5. An Enriching Moisturiser –

Honestly, if you have dry skin you should not leave your home without adding a good moisturiser.  Day Creams help hydrate and protect your skin throughout the day.  Night creams work to repair and regenerate your skin when you sleep so moisturising day and night is essential to maintain a healthy glow. Here are a few of my absolute favourite day and night creams. All of which I recommend reguarlarly to clients and have been tried and tested. Hydrating angels.

I hope I’ve given you enough tips to help your skin stay hydrated. If you’re looking for more and have some questions, please feel free to comment below.

What Does a Banana, Lemon and Honey got in common?

The answer is simple. They are all jam-packed with Mother Natures curative ingredients. I’ve been using this recipe for years and it’s been described by experts as the ‘painless free botox mask’. No needles needed to look amazing!

So What are some of the ingredients?

Bananas are loaded with essential minerals including potassium and, contain a compound called alpha-linolenic acid, which demonstrates significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  It enhances blood circulation, which also makes them a perfect ingredient to add to a face mask.

Lemon contains Vitamin C, known for its anti-aging and skin rejuvenating properties. Using masks or face creams rich in vitamin C helps to boost collagen production.deborah leonard makeup artist blog

Honey is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts moisture to the skin. It is well known for its curative and antimicrobial properties that help your skin to repair and protect itself.

Combine all three of these ingredients and you have a powerful, skin repairing antiaging and rejuvenating face-mask.

The Recipe

  • A small ripe banana
  • 1 Tablespoon of honey
  • 1  tsp Lemon Juice

How to!

Mash your banana in a small bowl. Add a tablespoon of natural honey and a teaspoon of lemon. Simply stir the ingredients together with your fork. Then the fun begins. You can put this on using your fingers or with a flat foundation brush (I use a foundation brush). Apply down T-zone, across forehead, cheeks, and chin.

Tip – Run a nice hot salt bath. Apply your mask before you sink into it. Leave the mask on for about 20 minutes while you soak.  Keep your feet elevated whilst wearing it as this will increase blood flow to the face.  Increased blood flow delivers more oxygenated blood, promotes cell growth and eliminates toxins from the skin.

Additional Benefits to this painless botox treatment – Your skin will feel hydrated and soothed because of the antimicrobial and nourishing properties in the banana and honey.  Thanks to the lemon, this simple mask will have a deep cleansing effect, which aids desquamation (fancy word for shedding dead skin cells), pores will be refined, fine lines plumped out, and your skin will look bright and radiant.

This is great for women of all ages, especially the fab over forties. You can apply it up to three times per week at night and follow it with you night oils and moisturizers. Go banana’s and peel back the years.

Give it a go and let me know how your skin feels after?
